Mercedes-Benz Unveils New 518-HP SUV

In case you haven't heard, Mercedes-Benz, in an effort to make their vehicle lineup more efficient, is slowly transitioning their models from 6.2-liter V8s to turbo 5.5-liter V8s. As is typical when people are confronted with change, many Tri-Pointed Star fans were not too happy to hear it. However, we assure you, this change is one that promises to bring good things. I mean, have you ever heard of a 518-horsepower SUV, before?

The Gran Turismo exotic sports car doesn't even offer that much drive for goodness sake. But, the new Mercedes-Benz ML66 AMG fitted with the new turbocharged 5.5 does...and that's not even with the available AMG Performance Package. Tack that puppy on and hp bumps up to 550. Torque goes from 550 lb.-ft to 560 lb.-ft.  Top speed grows from 155 miles per hour to 174 miles per hour. And sprint time, improves by point-one second, for a total time of four-point-six seconds. Needless to say, Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield is extremely excited about the ML66 AMG SUV's spring launch....Giddy doesn't even cover it.

How exactly does the envelope-pushing ML66 AMG compare to other Mercedes-Benz SUVs? We'll let you be the judge.

Mercedes-Benz SUV HP (Without Any Performance Package Upgrades)

- ML66 AMG: 515 hp
- GLK Class SUV: Up to 269 hp
- GL Class SUV: Up to 382 hp, depending on trim level
- G Class SUV: 382 hp
- M Class SUV: Up to 320 hp, depending on trim level
- R-Class SUV: 302 hp

It's pretty clear, right? ...A smaller engine doesn't necessarily mean compromised performance. It can, in fact, foster a greater margin in power, as evidenced by the comparison above. That said. We're not knocking the other Mercedes-Benz SUVs. Quite the contrary; beloved by us and many drivers across the Fairfield CA area, they deliver envious horsepower and prove you can have a big, spacious vehicle and be fast as the wind, too. The ML66 AMG is just, well, faster.
