We’ll get started by approaching the performance of the Mercedes-Benz and the Jaguar side-by-side.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. 2019 Jaguar F-Pace: Performance

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC focuses on comfort above all else. The GLC has nimble handling, and AMG® models have some of the most powerful engines in the class. You’re bound to find an engine to like in this Mercedes-Benz. The base GLC 300 comes with a 2.0-liter 241-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that should satisfy most shoppers. It delivers quick acceleration that’s great for both city and highway driving, but if you want even more power there are a number of options. All of the engines come with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The GLC is very maneuverable and has no trouble maintaining its composure around twists and turns in the road. Its driving modes help it transition from smooth to sporty on the fly.

The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace offers several peppy engine choices, a smooth-shifting transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. Add it all up, and you have a dynamic, agile SUV that’s prepared for any road condition. The F-Pace comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 247 horsepower. Several other engines are available. As you might guess, the F-Pace gets faster as the horsepower ratings climb, and the V6 and V8 options can really move this SUV with aplomb. All of the F-Pace’s engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though it’s not the star of the lineup, the base engine is plenty capable in all driving situations. This small SUV handles incredibly well and it rides comfortably. The F-Pace’s fuel economy is decent for the class.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. 2019 Jaguar F-Pace: Feature Comparison

The Mercedes-Benz GLC’s interior is nothing short of lavish. There are soft-touch surfaces all around the cabin, and standard wood trim adds another element of luxuriousness. There’s seating for up to five people in the GLC. The seats are supple, supportive, roomy and comfortable, and there’s plenty of room for adults in both rows. Leatherette upholstery, a 14-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a driver’s seat with memory settings are standard. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display, two USB ports, HD Radio, and *Bluetooth®. You’ll also get a suite of safety features, including a rearview camera, driver drowsiness monitoring, active brake assist, crosswind assist, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. PRESAFE® is also standard. This system tightens the seat belts and rolls up the windows if a collision is imminent.

The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace interior quality doesn’t live up to luxury-vehicle standards in a few places, and the infotainment system draws mixed reviews. Standard features in the F-Pace include a sliding panoramic roof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with a 10-inch touch screen, *Bluetooth®, an 11-speaker Meridian audio system, and HD Radio. Standard driver assistance features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed automatic emergency braking, driver drowsiness monitoring, and lane keep assist. The F-Pace’s infotainment system generally works well. The intuitive interface makes it easy to find the menus and settings you need, but a closer inspection reveals a few shortcomings. It doesn’t always pair easily with a smartphone, and the navigation system’s address-entry procedure feels unnecessarily complex.

*Bluetooth® is a registered mark Bluetooth® SIG, Inc.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. 2019 Jaguar F-Pace: Overall Comparison

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the highest-ranking luxury compact SUVs. It has an exceptionally lavish cabin, lots of features, and a supple ride. It also has a solid lineup of engines and easy maneuverability. The GLC’s base price is a little lower than the class average, and this Mercedes-Benz has a level of opulence and refinement that you’ll have a hard time finding from any of its competition.

The Jaguar F-Pace is a good SUV. It is powerful and agile, gets great fuel economy with its available turbodiesel engine, and comes with standard all-wheel drive. The seats are spacious and supportive, and there’s plenty of cargo space. Some rivals use more upmarket cabin materials and have better infotainment systems. It also sports an above-average price tag, so it isn’t the best value in the class.
